Short Term Disability Benefits

²ÝÁñÊÓƵ State University offers Short Term Disability insurance through the Metlife. Short Term Disability provides you with income replacement should you become disabled due to a non-occupational accident or sickness.
  • If you become disabled due to a non-occupational accident or sickness (including pregnancy), you are eligible to receive benefits equal to 60% of your weekly pay up to a maximum weekly benefit of $2,500. To apply for Short Term Disability benefits, you must call Metlife at 1-866-832-5759. Review the Metlife "How to initiate a claim" instructions below for details on the information you will need and how the process works. Metlife approves or denies all claims. Short Term Disability benefits begin on the 15th calendar day after the start of the disability and continue up to a maximum of 11 weeks.
  • Paid Leave Accrual and Short-Term Disability:
You are required to use your sick leave and vacation accruals, if applicable, while out on an approved medical leave of absence. If you file a claim for short-term disability and it is approved, you will be required to use sick/vacation time for the first 14 calendar days of your approved disability, known as the "elimination period". Your disability benefit payment would begin on the 15th day of your approved disability timeframe. We would not apply any sick or vacation time to your timecard while you are receiving disability benefits, as you may not receive pay from ²ÝÁñÊÓƵ while receiving paid disability benefits. We will resume applying sick and vacation time once your disability benefit ends, if applicable. Hours would be applied in whole day increments.

If you participate in the Donated Sick Leave Program, you will not be considered to receive a donation until all of your own paid leave time has been exhausted and you do not have any Short Term Disability benefits.

  • If you do not elect to enroll in the Short Term Disability insurance during your initial eligibility and elect to enroll during Open Enrollment, you will be required to complete an Evidence of Insurability form and be approved through the Metlife.
  • You pay for Short Term Disability coverage with after-tax dollars. Visit  for details.
